It is official the World Health Organisation has recognized Burnout as a medical syndrome/condition.

Unfortunately, this does not really help you because most countries around the world do not recognise Burnout as a medical condition that needs treatment. They have been slow to react.

In addition, you are probably not fluent in psychology and philosophy. This leaves you at a major disadvantage when trying to understand and deal with Burnout by yourself.

The reality is that you are living in an era of global achievement. Achievement is what makes the business world tick. It influences your personal life directly and your sense of self-worth. In every aspect of your life, you are expected to be perfect and achieve 100%, at everything all the time! To add insult to injury social media feeds your need to achieve, by showing you the fake perfection of everyone else.

The local and global society you live in is based on the reality that anything can be accomplished through your hard work and extra effort. Allegedly you have absolute freedom to choose the path to achievement and success. Just put in your “dues”,  and the extra effort, no matter what the personal cost, and the world will be yours. Unfortunately, this places a huge amount of unreasonable expectation on you and creates high levels of stress, anxiety and depression which if not dealt with leads to Burnout. This focus on extreme achievement drives “human doing” at the expense of “Human Being”. Leaving you feeling drained and unable to replenish your proverbial batteries.

“Failure” is seen as a weakness and exploited within highly politically oriented environments.

Fear of being seen as weak or flawed creates an unrealistic need for perfection, one which is impossible to attain or maintain. Setting you up for “failure”. This twisted view of failure inevitably speeds up and entrenches your Burnout. Leaving you feeling even more exhausted, irritable, cynical, disengaged, stressed and anxious.

To make matters even worse the reality of COVID-19, the lockdowns, working from home and the uncertainties of returning to the office have further added to the unpredictability of your life, creating even more stress and anxiety.

With the constant threat of further waves of COVID-19 infections, vaccination uncertainty and now the potential need for booster shots, more chaos is forced into your reality.

The modern achiever is compelled to perform more and more. Non-stop! Regardless of the impact of the pandemic on family and friends. Many of whom have lost jobs, livelihoods and in many unfortunate cases their lives to the virus.

The impact of the pandemic on the economy locally and globally has been devastating. As a modern achiever, you are required to ignore this reality and just carry on. Your work is never done. There is no one to say you have completed your labour. We often find ourselves in situations where recognition for our efforts is non-existent.

Add in Zoom fatigue, dealing with home environments and not being able to “switch-off” and you find yourself stretched way too thin.

The Pandemic has increased your workload exponentially resulting in a level of stress and fatigue that has impacted every aspect of your life.
